Ballistics testing facility at Shameerpet in Hyderabad

Syed Akbar
Hyderabad, April 12: Hyderabad on Thursday added yet another feather
to its cap with a world class integrated ballistics facility coming up
at Shamirpet in the city outskirts. The ballistics facility will
enable defence and security agencies to test their arms and ammunition
and bulletproof vests and helmets.

It will also help develop solutions that can be tested under local
conditions and against local ammunition. It is an advanced technical
development facility with state-of-the-art ballistics testing range,
600-ton helmet press and stab testing equipment under one roof.

Its unique advantage is its quick turnaround time in developing
solutions for law enforcing agencies and military and ballistics
apparel manufacturers. It has the capabilities to upgrade and test the
performance of armours for a higher threat level. It can conduct test
against local and international standards for ballistics and stab
resistance.

The ballistics facility is set up at DuPont Knowledge Centre in the
city. Announcing the launch, Rajeev Vaidya, president – South Asia,
DuPont, said, “it will develop solutions that help protect those who
protect us”.

“Indian defence and internal security forces have unique and
challenging ballistics protection requirements,” said Yati Waghray,
technology leader, DuPont Knowledge Centre. “We can be test under
local conditions and against local ammunition using international
standards, meeting the local requirements”, he added.

Ballistic and stab-resistant body armour has helped save the lives of
thousands of law enforcement and military personnel around the world,
including in India. The special fabric used in bullet- and stab-proof
vests and helmets is light in weight and five times stronger than
steel. The facility can roll out a bulletproof helmet in about 20
minutes and the product can be tested under lab conditions. The
stab-proof material protects against all types of stab weapons
including kitchen knife, and swords.
