Hyderabad, April 3: A unique numerological combination has contributed
to the victory of Team India in the Cricket World Cup, says a senior
city Vedic numerologist.
The numerological combination on April 2, 2011 (Saturday) was similar
to the one on June 25, 1983, when India first won the world cup in
cricket.
According to Vedic numerologist Mudigonda Gopikrushna, the last two
digits excluding millennium in 1983 is 83 and it sums up to 11 (8 +3).
Similarly the last two digits in 2011 are 11. The day was Saturday in
1983. April 2, 2011 was a Saturday.
"The name of the then captain Kapil is 9. The name Sachin also totals
to 9. The total date 25-6-1983 is 7 (destiny number) and this matches
with the destiny number of 2-4-2011. This destiny number also helped
India win over Pakistan on 30-3-2011," he said.
He said though the total of Sri Lanka captain Sangakkara is No. 9, the
Sri Lankan team could not win the cup due to the effect of No. 2
(April 2) and Saturday. The No. 2 is the enemy of Sri Lanka.

Citizenship row: Chess grand master Viswanthan Anand remains unfazed

Hyderabad, Aug 24: It takes a lot of patience to excel in the game of chess and Viswanathan Anand has wellmastered the art of patience.
The smile on Anand's face told it all. He was unfazed over the controversy the Union HRD Ministry created over his citizenship. Anand was quite cool and relaxed while expert mathematicians from around the world expressed unhappiness and shock over the way the grand master's citizenship was questioned by the Indian government.
According to the organisers of international congress of mathematicians, where Anand played chess with 40 mathematical geniuses, the grand master did not exhibit any anxiety. "Anand is a thorough gentleman and sportsperson. He took the entire episode rather in a sportive spirit," said Dr Rajat Tandon, head of the department of mathematics, University of Hyderabad.
Anand was more concerned about the chess event, and he did not want mediapersons to detract his attention from chess to the controversial issue of his citizenship. The grand master requested the organisers not to let the mediaperson in. Once the chess competition was over, which Anand won, mediapersons were allowed to witness the question and answer session.
That Anand does not want the controversy to be blown over was clear from the fact that he
advised organisers to ensure that no question relating to the HRD Ministry or the honorary PhD degree was put to him.

Hyderabad, Aug 24: World chess champion Viswanathan Anand was forced to submit a copy of his Indian passport to the Union HRD Ministry two months ago to prove that he is an Indian.
Anand's wife Aruna, who lives in Spain, had faxed the copy of the passport of the grand master after the Union HRD Ministry raised doubts about his Indian citizenship.
Aruna took the initiative and had sent a strongly worded letter to the ministry when things became clear that the chess whiz kid's file relating to the award of doctor of philosophy (honoris causa) by the University of Hyderabad was kept in abeyance on grounds of his "citizenship".
The University of Hyderabad, which is also the local organiser of the international mathematical congress where it wanted to honour Anand along with Harvard university professor David Mumford, too sent a number of clarification to the Union HRD ministry stating that Anand is an Indian holding an Indian passport though he stays in Spain.
The university first sensed the problem in July. Since then it has been sending clarificatory notes to the HRD ministry, which however remained unconvinced till the grand master refused to accept the honour. Anand's refusal forced Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal to personally intervene and clear the file.
According to Dr Rajat Tandon, head of the department of mathematics, HCU, "we learnt
somewhere in July this year that the HRD Ministry is suspecting Anand's nationality. We sent several clarifications to them but still they have not cleared the file related to the award of honorary doctorate."
The university too obtained a copy of Anand's passport and sent it to the ministry along
with the clarificatory notes.
Dr Rajat admitted, "there had been a lot of correspondence between the University and the
Ministry on the issue. In fact, Anand's wife Aruna herself faxed the copy of Anand's passport to the ministry".
President Pratibha Patil is the visitor of the University of Hyderabad and in that capacity she has to clear the proposal forwarded by the ministry. The file was kept in abeyance and not forwarded to the President for her assent.

Hyderabad, Aug 24: The Union HRD Ministry's questioning of world chess champion Viswanathan Anand's citizenship is a deliberate attempt to deny the doctor of philosophy degree (honoris causa) by the
University of Hyderabad to the Indian grand master.
There's no rule that only Indian nationals should be awarded honorary doctorates by Indian universities. The University of Hyderabad has sent Anand's name along with that of Prof David Mumford of Harvard University for the honorary degree. While Prof David's name was cleared without raising an eyebrow, the file relating to Anand was held up on the suspicion whether he is an Indian citizen.
Viswanathan Anand continues to be an Indian citizen even though he has been living in Spain for about six years. He holds the Indian passport and at best can be described as a non-resident Indian (NRI). But questioning his nationality is not only an insult but also can be construed to be a clever ploy by some officials to deny him the coveted award.
"Even if Anand is a foreign national he is eligible for the doctorate degree. The same HRD ministry has cleared the name of David Mumford of Harvard University for the award. Prof David is an American citizen. When Prof David is eligible why Anand's file should be kept pending. This clearly shows that it was a deliberate act on the part of some officials in the ministry," said senior scientist and researcher Dr MN Khaja.
The HRD ministry had enough time to verify the citizenship details of Anand. The University sent the file to the ministry earlier this year. It has also followed up the issue several times, the last being on August 18, a day before the International Congress of Mathematicians bagan in Hyderabad. The University of Hyderabad, which is the local organiser of the mathematical event, proposed to award the doctorates to Anand and Prof David during the event, which is scheduled to conclude on August 29.
BJP State president G Kishan Reddy demanded an inquiry into the serious bureaucratic lapse and penal action against the officials involved. "The Prime Minister should intervene and clear the mess that the HRD Ministry is in now. The Centre should apologise to Anand," he said.
Incidentally, in 2003 Anand has been conferred the Jameo de Oro, Spain's highest civilian award given to a foreigner. While Spain recognised the Indian grand master's contribution to chess, the Indian government is embroilled in a controversy whether he is a citizen of India.

Hyderabad, Aug 24: Irked by a callous bureaucratic poser on whether he was Indian or not, the world chess champion Viswanathan Anand on Tuesday refused the degree of doctor of philosophy (honoris causa) offered by University of Hyderabad.
But it was quite evident that Anand was hurt by the way the Union ministry of human resources development questioned his nationality, forgetting how he did the country proud many a time. The doctorate was scheduled to be awarded on Tuesday night at the International Congress of Mathematicians, but the event had to be postponed following the controversy.
Though the union HRD minister, Mr Kapil Sibal, tried to make amends by telephoning Anand and requesting him to accept the doctorate, the Indian Grandmaster was not in the mood to receive the honour on Tuesday night.
“Anand has done India proud and we should be proud of those who climb the heights of global excellence,” Mr Sibal said, in an obvious attempt at damage control. Sources said the chess champ may decide on a future date to accept the award.
The University of Hyderabad had sent a proposal to the Union HRD ministry on August 18 seeking clearance for the award of a honorary doctorate to the World Chess Champion Vishwanathan Anand, along with renowned mathematician, Mr David Mumford, of Harvard University.But officials in the human resources development ministry kept the file pending wondering whether the Grandmaster was an Indian or Spanish national. The World Champion has been staying in Spain for the past six years but continues to hold the Indian citizenship.
"I have always played under the Indian flag," said Anand, before taking up a chess game simultaneously with 40 mathematicians from around the world.
“I hold an Indian passport right from the time I took my first overseas trip. I do not understand the issue.” Since the University of Hyderabad is a Central varsity, it needs prior clearance from the Union HRD ministry to award honorary doctorates.
Dr Rajat Tandon, who heads the department of mathematics in the University of Hyderabad, said he
was embarrassed at the way the HRD officials had treated Anand.It may be difficult for the university to award the honorary doctorate in the next six months as it will not be easy to find a date convenient to both Anand, who stays in Spain, and Dr Mumford, who is from the US.
"The university is now looking for a convenient date to honour Anand and Mumford," Dr Tandon said.

Cricket betting: Hyderabadi punters have the field day

Hyderabad, March 29: When Pakistan won the Bangalore test to level the cricket series with India, punters in Hyderabad made a big celebration. It was really an occasion for them to celebrate as the money involved in the betting game was quite high and it's all for them to take home.
Unlike their counterparts elsewhere, city punters favoured Pakistan even before the start of the third test, despite the fact that the Pakis were almost written off. City punters are "double-happy" as their earlier prediction of a India win at Kolkata test also came true.
According to a bookie, punters here loaded odds 2:1 in favour of Pakistan as India had never won a test match in the Garden City.
Points out satta bazar operator Pradeep, "Of the four test matches India played on the Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium in Bangalore against Pakistan, it lost three and drew one test. Pakistan won three matches there earlier. Moreover, Pakistan was under tremendous pressure to win the Bangalore match to level the series. We loaded the dice in favour of Pakistan and our prediction came true."
Strangely enough, city Task Force police, who conduct regular raids during cricket series, are silent during the ongoing Pak tour of India. None of the bookie hideouts was raided this time though police officials admit in private that the city's satta bazar had made a turnout of at least Rs 40 crore during the first three test matches.
Punters all over the country changed odds quite frequently as the chances of the match heading for a draw were high at least till the tea break on the final day of the Bangalore test. But the Hyderabadi bookies stuck with their favourite Pakistan even when India was at 108 for two.
"We do not know about punters outside Hyderabad. As far as we are concerned, we take a decision after working out several details including individual statistics of cricketers, ground and team. We work it out so meticulously that most of our predictions come true. Say 99.99 per cent. We bid for India at the Kolkata test and India won", observes a bookie from Begum Bazar area of the city.
Test series is over and punters have made a big money. And what about the one day internationals that begin on April 2? As bookie Mahesh reveals, the odds are "yet to be fixed".
"The lots will be thrown just a day before the first ODI at Kochi or after the toss. Right now we cannot say anything. Betting turns more serious after a couple of ODIs if India or Pakistan clinches them", he says.
Cricket satta bazar in twin cities operate in three different ways - in person, through cell phone or laptop (internet). But the cell phone type is the most preferred one for its secrecy. During the Bangalore test at one stage the odds against India changed from 2:1 to 6:1. A notable feature of bookies in the city is that they take a day off from their routine business or work to concentrate on betting. Monday was the busiest day for bookies as the odds changed quickly after lunch.
