A novel way to celebrate valentine day: Dental college students auction rose, donate money to poor students

Syed Akbar
Hyderabad: A young medico holds a pink rose in hand as his classmate raises up to auction
it. The offset price was Rs 150. Medico after medico bid for the rose. The price goes up
and up, and finally a professor joins the bidding, and knocks off the coveted rose in the
auction.

One may wonder what’s so special about the rose. It was the Valentine Day and the medicos
wanted to celebrate it in a unique style. Put up a beautiful rose bud for auction and
donate the bid money to underprivileged children. The management of Sri Sai College of
Dental Surgery, Vikarabad, was so moved by the charitable spirit of  its students that it
added its own contribution to the students’ money and donated it to a nearby Gurukul.

Dr Ch Sampath Reddy was the proud winner of the auction. “Unlike others, the students
wanted to celebrate Valentine Day as a charitable event. They wanted to share their love
with the poor children of a Gurukul near the college. The bid was going up and up, and
enthused by the atmosphere, I too joined the bidding and won it. I was happy that the
money is going for a charitable cause, for the welfare of poor children,” he pointed out.

The runner-up Dr Abdul Habeeb Bin Mohsin, an intern in Sri Sai College of Dental Surgery,
says though he narrowly lost the bid, he could make up by purchasing a few roses at a
special stall set up by medicos. The students also sold roses and the money went to the
Gurukul. “It was a great sight to see all students and staff together running around rose
counters to grab their roses and goodies at any price to make their friends happy, and to
give them wonderful feelings of love and care,” he adds.

Dr Chandana, Dr Madhavi and Dr Geeshma are happy that they could sell about 1000 roses,
apart from putting up the special rose for auction. The college chairman, Dr P
Parthasarathi Reddy, also gave a matching donation.

“Let our fun be the fun for the poor,” has been the mission of the students, they said
adding that they have been holding charitable events regularly under “Helping Hands”
cause.
